Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Hakkai has a naturally normal body type with an average metabolism. But due to years of roughhousing and traveling he has some lean muscle on him. He's tall for his ethnicity, standing at 5'11".
2. How old is he? 24
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? He has a rather self-conscious reserved body language. He stands straight and stiff most of the time with amazing posture. But he can often be found with his arms wrapped around his torso in some manner.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Physically he is fit. More then needed. But he doesn't have the best stamina when it comes to his immunity. He tends to waste his energy too quickly and is prone to falling sick more often then usual because of it. He's one of those types of people that, while looking out for everyone else's well-being, tends to forget about his own health in the process.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Usually a bit stiff when interacting with others due to his awkward social behavior, his body movement only becomes graceful if not absolutely fluid when doing something he enjoys. Whether its martial arts or regular at home work, he'll move with sure quick and natural movements, only to immediately clam up again if someone he doesn't know all too well approaches him.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? He's of average looks for the most part with a few minor attractive qualities. Despite his work-intensive lifestyle he's said to have rather nice soft hands with long fingers. His eyes are a bright green in color despite his ethnicity, which usually tends to make him stand out to others, especially seeing as it is probably his eyes that give away his emotions despite his reserved behavior. He's also quite self-conscious over his almost-girlish face, often being complimented for it, he sees it as one of the many unfortunate strikes against his masculinity. As for how he perceives himself, he is extremely self-conscious over all. He doesn't have much faith in even his better qualities. Because of that he's often displayed as the type to show as little skin as possible and has rather tense reserved body-language.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Hakkai has a light complexion that makes his dark hair stand out all the more despite his years of traveling. His body is also immensely scarred up. Although that would only be noticeable if he were to remove his clothes in some way, which he would never do. He's been through the rough and tumble quite a bit and because of such his body is riddled with minor slash marks and bullet scars. The most prominent is a large deep gash which is sprawled across the width of his abdomen.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Asian hair. It's short cropped but slightly messy and dark. It looks black in most light but is actually just a really dark shade of brown. It's smooth and well tamed, especially as he has a bit of a thing with self-hygiene. Short cropped and buzzed in the back his bangs are a big excessively long, if just to cover up his right eye.
9. What color are his eyes? Unnaturally green despite his ethnicity. Because of this he has been known to stand out to others of Asian decent. In some light they appear blue.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Like stated previously he has a rather large scar across his abdomen. And his eyes are something people notice off the bat. One thing that's a bit harder to tell though is that his left eye is artificial, a cybernetic schiz-tech eye made to replace the one he lost years ago. He's also not human, so this isn't even how he truly looks. Although he rarely shows his true self, his hair is known to be longer, about shoulder-length, and dark green vine like markings are known to tattoo over the majority of his body. He has long sharp claws, ridged fang-like teeth and his right eye (the one that isn't artificial) turns into a golden cats eye in appearance. His ears are also much longer and pointed.
11. What are his chief tension centers? His stomach, especially during poor weather when his wounds begin to act up. Also his shoulders due to years of overbearing stress.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Reserved. Hakkai is just the type to find his fancy at the GAP or Old Navy or something of the sort. He loves button-down collared shirts, and slacks or khaki pants. His shoes most often seem to be loafers. When dressing up he a regular suit-and-tie type of guy. Every now and then he can also be seen wearing more casual Chinese tunics. He also switches regularly between a regular pair of glasses and a monocle. When traveling with his pet he'll be found with a sash over his left shoulder as to keep the small dragons claws from ripping through his clothes. He also wears a series of ear-cuffs along the rim of his left ear. These are his power-limiters and what keeps him in a more human appearance. The color scheme he usually goes for is more often then not natural colors such as deep greens and browns.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? He's extremely comfortable in them. In fact they only bring out his personality. They're usually also very well fitted seeing as he's the type to spend that extra time to make sure his appearance is just right.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? For the most part he does. Asides from his more casual tunics, pretty much everything he wears is office quality.
You knew it was coming. Boxers, briefs or commando? Briefs. He's uptight like that. Can't really picture someone as reserved as him in anything else but a pair of tighty-whities.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? He speaks in a high tenor with an overly forced gentle tone. He has a bad habit of always using polite mannerisms in his speech, and very rarely raises his voice. It's because of this that when he yells in anger it makes things only scarier. He's prone to tossing out dark-humor and sarcasm. When he gets excited about something his voice usually raises a little higher in pitch and gets faster in tempo. (Here's a link to his character song which is mostly speaking and gives a fair feel of how his voice sounds.)
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Evenly and soft. He usually speaks fairly easily unless he is to be embarrassed in some form. It's almost unnatural how calm his voice is at times.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? Like stated previously, he is overly polite. And tends to act so towards everyone he meats. More often then not people tell him to talk to them more casually, but unless he's known you for a while he'll tend to forget that and go back to being all too polite once again. Also his speech pattern is a little more on the feminine side and he fully admits to it.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? Mandarin Chinese as well as a bit of Japanese and English due to his studies.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Not often. He's never really had need to before coming to Nexus.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? Yes, he's an extremely well spoken character and seems to think about his words a little too much before speaking out. His experience as a school teacher had probably helped with this, but he was prone to well spoken debates since way back in his childhood.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? Without a doubt eloquent. His smooth speech patterns are something that most people don't usually use. He's also quite witty when it comes to sarcastic-comebacks and witty humor. He's the type of person who's usually known to get the last line in.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? More book-smart then street smart by a long shot. He spent most of his years crammed behind books studying and very little of it interacting socially. He's also on a borderline genius level intellect having graduated from college with dual majors by the time he was 17.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? He has a fast working mind and is rather well with both methods. He prefers to act more patient and think things out but if time comes where he needs to make a quick decision he's more then capable of doing so.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? A very practical mindset, Hakkai is a bit of a pessimistic realist. Though he does his best to appear as optimistic as possible on the outside which often leads to him dealing with other peoples problems over dealing with his own current issues.Has an even balance of intuition and logic that make working off-the-book jobs easy for him to handle.
4. What kind of education has the character had? He was taught a Catholic education at an early age, and though not entirely for it, it shows. He spent the good first half of his life completely behind books rather then interacting with other children and when not being taught at his classes would often be found studying on his own. Because of this he was found and recruited into a college for the gifted by the age of 15. In just two years he managed to graduate with two majors and then immediately upon leaving took on a job as a school teacher.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? He is a master at useless knowledge. He tends to pick up things from almost anything and everything that piques his curiosity and he researches on. Because of this he knows how to paint, how to lock pick, how to cook, manipulate his ki, knit, heal, etc ,etc. He's willing to learn about anything and everything he puts his mind to and is more then happy to always pick up a new skill to learn. School wise he majored in both Physics as well as Theology.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? Introvert. He keeps to himself for the most part and usually is quite a bit awkward when first meeting people. Because of this it's hard for him to get close to anyone as he usually only keeps professional contacts. When he does make the occasional friend though he loosens up considerably and is a lot more comfortable around them.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Hakkai is a tricky one with this. Though seemingly calm and gentle he actually is quite prone to violent mood-swings. He sinks into depression quite easily, especially with bad weather which more often then not only brings back bad memories for him. He also, though doing his best at most times to control it, has a horrible temper. He usually does his best to push his emotions to the side and force out a smile despite himself, but if something especially triggers him he has been known to grow especially violent and tense. He's pretty much an emotional time-bomb waiting to explode at the any moment. Majority of the time though he does his best to act as cheerful and friendly as possible, which often times make his smiles and polite demeanor seem forced.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? Overly cautious, he doesn't take too well to people upon first meeting them. He does his best to remain as polite and friendly as possible, but more often then not it just makes things seem awkward and forced. He's also the suspicious type, though he is usually more relaxed about it. If you do get to know him he will arm up considerably and open up quite a bit. It takes a lot of work on both sides though for something like that to happen.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react? He's more likely to react then act. He does his best to talk people out of things then take action, more out of fear as to what he might do to them if he does.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Hakkai's more prone to fighting then running away. Despite his slightly feminine nature Hakkai never backs away from a physical challenge. He WILL though do his best to try and convince the opposing party out of it before resorting to such tactics.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? He is extremely prone to tossing out dark humor on whim. Any good rotting corpse jokes? How about humiliation puns? His sense of humor is something that's not usually widely appreciated, and in all truth it tends to down-right scare a lot of people. Some aren't even sure if he's really kidding or not. Throughout the series his jokes have ranged through, decomposition, dragging bodies naked through towns with their nipples clamped to cars, rigor mortis, and general messing around with dead people.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Nothing has been clinically diagnosed although it is more often then not implied he's has many things going on in that sick little mind of his. He has major OCD tendencies, bouts of bipolar personality disorder, and asocial tendencies. It is also often debated in the fandom whether or not he may actually be a sociopath, only dealing with others emotions as how he logically knows how to but not really seeming to care.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
-His growing up and being raised at the Catholic Missionary Orphanage
-Being accepted into college at an early age
-Meeting his first love and living with her after graduating
-Her kidnapping and death
-His transformation into a youkai
-His giant homicidal killing spree
-His meeting Gojyo, Goku and Sanzo
-His name change and starting a new life
-Loosing his eye
-His Holy Journey westward to stop the youkai rebellion against humans
-His face off and defeat of the sole survivor of the group the slaughtered
14. What does he fear? Himself. His own past. Loosing control of himself again, especially now that he is youkai.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations? He would love to simply one day settle down and live a normal every-day life. So far every attempt on his part has been futile.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? His past. Enough said. He changed his name as to have his slate wiped clean and he wishes to never go through the moments of it again. He often tells others who remember him from those days that that person has died a long time ago.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents. Hakkai never knew his parents. Supposedly they divorced one another when he was only three years old and he stayed with his mother. But when he was five she vanished mysteriously and he was left under the care of the sisters at the orphanage.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? He had a twin sister named Kanan who grew up separately from him. Because of that when they finally met he had no idea they were related and thus decided to have a rather intimate incestuous relationship. Remember that "first love" that was stated to have died earlier? ...Yep. She was then kidnapped by a nearby youkai clan raped repeatedly, impregnated and through a year of barely being kept alive for the soul purpose of giving birth to the child, proceeded to commit suicide by stabbing herself repeatedly through he womb the first moment she got.Which was right in front of Hakkai Sort of makes the homicidal rampage a little more understandable.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand? None. Hakkai currently has no living family that he knows of.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? Sanzo, Gojyo and Goku are, against his better judgement, the closest thing to family he has. Sanzo being his guardian has to keep a close eye on him in order to make sure Hakkai keeps himself in check. Goku is like a young student to him, always giving him lessons and providing information for his junior. Gojyo is his best friend and old roommate, the two having lived together for nearly five years now. Also his pet dragon, Jeep is like a child to him.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? As stated above, his best friend is Sha Gojyo. A youkai-human half-breed who grew up on the streets living a lifestyle extremely opposite to Hakkais. Gojyo met Hakkai just after his slaughter-spree, near death with his stomach slashed open and his innards splattered out everywhere. Gojyo praises himself for "shoving them all back in and getting a doctor to sew him up again". He then continued to nurse Hakkai back to health without asking any questions about his past or how he ended up like that. Due to Gojyos behavior Hakkai grew rather fond of him and the two proceeded to become roommates after Hakkai healed up.
6. Does he have other close friends? Also stated above Sanzo and Goku are fairly close to him. He also has a familiar relationship with Ms.Yaone of the Kougaiji party the two of them being quite similar in personality and automatically making them get along rather well with one another. She may also be a possible romantic interest in his eyes because of past actions which have come to make her remind him of Kanan.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people? He's usually rather awkward when first meeting people. He's overly polite and a little too self-conscious as to what others may think of him. But if one gets past that initial bit of his personality he has a tendency to stick fairly closely to all those he does consider as a "friend".
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends? He doesn't have any family so "friends" is the only answer he can give really.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once? Widowed now single and possibly ready to start looking again.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? Cannonly it's implied he may have developed something for Yaone. But RP not really.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? Why his dearly-departed twin sister of course! She was his first and only real love ever.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner? He emotionally likes stronger women. As quoted from the series itself, "The next time I'm with someone she has to be indestructible. She has to have a nice figure and a fetching personality. She'll be happy to have my children one after another. And even if I slave to support our large family she'll push me around when I come home and say 'Now father! You're a nuisance!'"
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any? Not at the moment, but as stated above he wouldn't mind having children one day. He seemingly would like to have daughters.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies? Yaone is his rival in name only, seeing as even though the two of them face off against one another quite often they also get along amazingly well. His largest rival would have to be Hazel Grouse. The two of them are like two teenage girls in a bitter jealous rivalry whenever they stand face to face.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale? He's straight, though questionably. He has only shown sexual interest in his sister in his life. Although he has stated to want to find another woman to settle down with one day. He has also often threatened his travel buddies with oddly sexual responses whenever they do something displease him, and not a single one of them has come to doubt that he might actually do it. Which is one of the many reasons he often gets the last word in arguments.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? He's not uncomfortable about talking about the subject offhandedly but if it starts to concern himself he gets nervous. He doesn't have much experience in such things and because of that will get embarrassed if the situation is brought up. He's also extremely self-conscious about his appearance, making it hard for him to ever think anyone would ever wish to get close to him.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? He might have a bit of a subconscious narcissistic complex due to the twin thing. Also might be a bit of a sadomasochist. But he likes women who are able to take control of and handle a situation.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac or choice) sign? How well does she fit type? He's a Virgo, and he sticks to it amazingly well. He's timid, organized and meticulous. He's an introvert and reflective. He does his best to leave his past behind himself despite the situation. An earth sign deals with his closeness to nature, and his overly studious behavior. Pretty much anything you read on the wiki sight available relates to Hakkai. In fact even the associated body part, which is where his scar and weaknesses are.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life? He was raised Catholic, but he doesn't stick closely to it. As a child he actually resented the teachings he was given and did his best to argue against the sisters about gods existence as often as possible. As he grew older though, he seems to have become mostly agnostic, and has taken up an interest in studying theology. Because of that he has extensive knowledge in almost all forms of religion and the cultures surrounding them. He most certainly can't deny the gods themselves seeing as he met some Buddhist deities face-to-face.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? He has a sense of morality, but it is highly skewed and distorted. He does not hold high regards for life and strongly believes in the codes of "survival of the fittest". He's not afraid to hurt others or even go so far to kill them, and holds no regret for doing so afterwards. In fact, there are many times throughout the series he could be seen carelessly twisting peoples arms out of their sockets or blasting them to bits with his ki while tossing a casually lighthearted joke at his friends. He destroys property without much regard and has a large bounty on his head even after changing his name and starting his life over again. He does do his best to only harm those he thinks "deserves" it though. More often then not only attacking those who make a first move towards him or anyone he cares for. He doesn't care for cigarettes or drugs and the like, but lets them pass, thinking that every person should be allowed to do what their own life as they see fit.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? Hakkai is an open-minded person, and takes everyone else's beliefs respectfully. It is because of this that you wont ever see him go off ranting in what he believes is right or wrong. He's tolerant curious and insightful, usually taking anyone else with a different viewpoint as a learning experience in which he could learn more about others lives and cultures.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them? Hakkai has his prejudices cannonly against youkai. He originality saw them as horrible savage creatures who lived off of people only to wreak havoc and cause pain to others. His hate was great enough where he actually didn't mind wishing genocide upon the entire species, and has often hated himself when he turned into one. As time began to pass though this sense of self-hate is slowly fading away. Now that he has spent a few years living through the viewpoint of a youkai he's began holding up respect for them if not holding them on mutual grounds as humans. It was only recently hat he finally began to admit that youkai and humans aren't so different. His reasons for this prejudice, of course, are due the the youkai kidnappings/ rape and cause of suicide for his sister/lover.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? He makes a fairly average salary doing day-to-day odd jobs. Because of this he lives life comfortably while not too excessively.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him? Social-status, he's lower middle class. He started off poor in his early life but due to his intellect has been able to pull through and live a fairly normal financial life. He's humbled by it and if anything he wishes for nothing different. When he travels with the others he does get a considerable amount of wealth if only through association with Sanzo and his gold-card. But he has yet to let the money affect him asides from even making him slightly stingier as to keep the others for abusing it.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? Hakkai has never lived in a single location for more then two years after he left the orphanage. Moving from place to place frequently, he doesn't really have much attachment to any single location. Cannonly, as of late he has spent the past three years living on the road. He has his bags, his Jeep, and that's all he needs. Before that he lived in a single bedroom house just outside a village with his best friend and roommate. And before that he he lived with his sister/lover in a small house in the middle of another town. And even before that he stayed at a boarding school.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on? Books. Books. And more books. Possibly cleaning supplies as well, the housewife at heart he is. He tends to frequent the home-shopping network as well as random how-to magazines. He has a hobby trying to find out natural beauty remedies. And he paints on occasion as well.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else? "A Jack of All Trades And A Master At None" is a phrase that is used often for Hakkai throughout the series. His ideal job is in teaching, and he highly enjoys it. But he has just enough random skills where he's more often then not making his money off of odd, if not slightly dubious off-the-book jobs. He had once mentioned that he would like to start up a maid-cafe one day when he's a dirty old man. No one's quite sure if he was joking or not.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time? As stated earlier his main interests lie in learning random things as well as reading, a lot. He also likes spending his free time cooking, cleaning, painting, gardening, practicing health and beauty remedies, and various other assortments of things. His free time he always thinks is best spent taking a long bath with a hot cup of tea and a good book to read.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? Hakkai has a sensitive stomach due to his injuries and because of such tends to avoid stronger foods. He prefers his coffee with milk but no sugar and loves anything with pork in it. He doesn't hate sweets but he doesn't eat them much either. Alcohol on the other hand is something he consumes perhaps a bit too much. He tends to drink excessively whenever he has the chance, and due to that seems to have a tolerance to surpass the gods themselves.

-
-His meeting Gojyo, Goku and Sanzo
-His name change and starting a new life
-Loosing his eye
-His Holy Journey westward to stop the youkai rebellion against humans
-
Remember that "first love" that was stated to have died earlier? ...Yep. She was then kidnapped by a nearby youkai clan raped repeatedly, impregnated and through a year of barely being kept alive for the soul purpose of giving birth to the child, proceeded to commit suicide by stabbing herself repeatedly through he womb the first moment she got.
